HUASCARAN » |

 |
 |
| The south summit
has an altitude of 6768 masl. and the
North summit has an altitude of 6655 masl.
It is visible from great part of the Callejon
de Huaylas in the Valley of Santa River.
The Huascaran is the highest snow-capped
mountain in Peru, the fourth in America,
and also the highest tropical mountain
in the world. The North summit was climbed
for the first time in 1908 by the American
lady Annie Peck and her two Swiss guides.
Later she affirmed that she had held the
worldwide record of altitude for women.
The first ascent to the South summit (the
highest) was in 1932 by the pioneering
expedition of the Austrians Philipp Borchers,
Erwinn Echneider, and Hans Kinzl, who
climbed it many times and did scientific
research during the 30’s; the first
Peruvian ascent was in 1953 by the brothers
Apolunio, Guido, and Pedro Yanac with
Felipe Mautino and Marcario Angeles. |

During the last years the Huascaran
has been the place were many particular events
took place, for example, the flight from the
south summit in the Delta (Rene Ghilini, 1977)
and the stay of 66 days at 6700 masl. because
of some research on the effects of altitude
in the organism (Nicolás Jaeger, 1979).
At present, the Huascaran is the spot of hundreds
of climbers from all over the world every year. |
